Thaipusam procession at Batu Caves

Finally got to attend one of the biggest yearly events in Malaysia. We set off at 5am and thanks to Gigi for helping me figuring out the route (end up didn't use that as we fear the congestion due to procession) as well as owj for suggesting to use MRR2. We parked quite a distance away and walked to the main gate following the crowd cause we were blur XD

Along the way, there were hair shaving booths, Indian snacks stalls and we see throngs of people (mainly women folk) carrying palkudams or milk pots. At the base of the 272 steps, dividers were set up to ease the flow of crowds. Not knowing that the path I was standing on eventually became the main path for the procession to pass by. The men and some women who are in a trance happened right before my eyes! It was an exciting experience to be a part of this event. Shall continue with more photos after my tests~

Pretty much straight-out-of-the-camera, minor curve adjustment and gradient fill (still no $$ for ND filter). It was not a misty morning, rather it was condensation on my lens. Always let your camera reach the same temperature as its exterior before taking it out, particularly from a cold room to outside because condensation is bad! Though you may get some nice dreamy effect.

For a small fee of 40¢, men on these motorised sampan carries passengers across the Kuching River to the opposite bank. It is like a lesser version of Venice.. rural scenery blends with recent development in the area. Perhaps back in the days, the sampan was simply a wooden boat with the roof and meant to be rowed. Now it has Astro advertising on the tarp and the oars have become a decoration.

The one at night was captured on the first night we landed in Kuching. I saw this majestic building on the way to the hotel and it was the first thing I wanted to photograph.

The one in the morning was taken the next day. I was supposed to wait for the sunrise, but by the time I got ready to walk to the waterfront, the sky was already white-wash bright! I had to use my shades as an ND filter *dumdum* The photo has a purple tint and I should've work more to reduce it :\

I ♥ Kuching! Yes it's a beautiful and clean city, I met some friendly people, well except the man at the Tourism Information Centre! *cough*civil officer*cough*

High-Key Veggie Burger

I made a veggie burger this morning! The patties are simply mixture of red kidney beans, oats and some spices. Just my subtle way of trying to convince my family that vegetarian can be yummy.. lol :P

For the lack of human interaction skill in my part, the veg burger was my innocent substitute for a high-key photography experiment. A strong backlight from the window reduces shadow cast, then I brought up the exposure of the subject in RAW. I think it worked pretty well :D Before this, I've tested the same technique but using front-lit method on a self-portrait. Seems like it work both ways.

Yesterday's training session at Bukit Jalil.

When we got there all the front seats were taken up, the sun was setting low and shining right smack in our face. Hot, humid and our vision marred by hazy weather. But nothing could dampen the spirit of the fans! Later on, I moved to the front, sucking in the misfortune of having to stand behind some smokers. To see Scholes, Giggs, Ferdinand, Rooney and the squad not through a layer of tv screen - AWESOME.

Traffic was pretty horrendous on the way back. We got stuck for almost half an hour bumper-to-bumper. Can't begin to imagine how the situation will be like tonight, on the real match day of Man Utd vs Malaysia XI. Our plan is to take the LRT and hope for the best not to be crushed after the game :p

What a turn of events in this season's Formula 1! The Turkish GP finished with the lesser teams grabbing the points, leaving favourites Ferrari/McClaren/Renault floating in the middle of the constructor's table.

This is a photo captured at Sepang F1 2009. The lady was talking to her partner, and they had to lean nearer because of the deafening atmosphere as the car races by. I only had a split second to capture this moment, so I didn't manage to open up the aperture to put the guy behind out of focus. The photo could have been better without the background distraction.

Woke up at 4am this morning to hike up Broga Hill in Semenyih (somewhere at the border of Negeri Sembilan/Selangor). We got slightly lost (couldn't find the entrance to the hill because the trail is in an oil palm farm), forgot to bring torchlight (rely on h/p illuminance), mosquito kisses, etc ... but we made it up there in the nick of time before sunrise. The view was breath taking and the air refreshingly crisp!

Le Tour de Langkawi Stage 7

I've been studying for my tests for the past week, then I discovered in The Star newspaper on Sunday itself that Le Tour de Langkawi is staging its final leg in KL! Its an annual event and one opportunity that I couldn't miss out. I tried to preset my camera settings because I anticipated myself to fumble all over the fast actions, but failed epicly *lol*. The start off was flagged when I was still checking the exposure, so I had a set of overexposed photos *sad*. Later, I took my spot under the shadow of the LRT rail near Masjid Jamek and set my camera to ISO400 with 3 modes in standby so that I can switch easily: (M) 1/50 f9 for panning, (Av) f7.1 and (Tv) 1/800 which I later drop to 1/320. It was my first action photography which I find too fast paced for me to focus and react. I do need to improve on what I've learned that day ;)
